The Barn 12 x 9 in.; Pen and brown ink on off white paper
The barn, in my opinion, is the showpiece of the grounds. As was common at the time
the barn is the largest, best built and most important structure on the farm. It was
built of cut and fitted local field stone blocks on a frame of heavy oak timbers.
Built on the side of a hill, it is five stories tall in front and three in the back
(see The Barn from the Back). The lowest level, partly
obstructed here by an ivy covered stone wall, has a dirt floor and stalls for larger
animals (horses, cows, ...). Upper levels of wood have storage and work spaces and
the hayloft.
